Who We Are
Seagull is a boutique hair salon of high acclaim in the West Village of NYC. The “Haute-Choix” of queer hair salons in NYC, Seagull boasts a star staff of the best stylists and colorists in New York. We offer haircuts, hair color, styling, conditioning, hair-repair treatments, and luxury color services in an inviting downtown setting. We do everything from balayage highlights and every kind of blonde to high-impact creative colors. We offer ammonia-free color lines for the very least environmental impact whenever possible. Seagull Salon is open seven days a week until 9 PM to accommodate the schedules of New York’s best and busiest.
Our History
Seagull was founded in 1971, an auspicious year for Women’s autonomy and the heyday of gay liberation. Not a stone’s throw from the Christopher Street piers and around the corner from the first feminist restaurant in the country, Mother Courage. Seagull resides across the street from the historic West Village Stonewall Inn and Sheridan Square gay liberation monument. Julius, the longest-running gay bar in New York City, is around the corner. The salon was named for Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach’s bestseller of the time. Seagull was the first unisex barber shop in New York City (if not the country).
The place
Our salon is located in a yellow brick building that was once the site of the Greenwich Village Theatre (1917-1930). The salon exists in the same space where theatre was an avant-garde venue presenting Martha Graham’s early work and the first above-ground shows of “female impersonators.” It was also the birthplace of the legendary musical revue, The Greenwich Village Follies. While Seagull soon moved, spending more than thirty years on West 10th Street, we have returned home. Our sunlit second-floor loft space, with its West 4th Street entrance, is in the same magical building off Sheridan Square where we started!
Seagull culture
Manhattan Stylist Shaun Surething presides over Seagull Salon as NYC’s “Downton Doyenne” of hair. Together, he and Johanna Fateman, musician and art writer, imagined our current loft space. The two took over and transformed the business in 2006. In 2015, they reimagined the salon as an upstairs oasis, working closely with architect Ben Warwas. Seagull graces its walls with a revolving roster of works by highly regarded artists. Paintings, photographs, drawings, installations, and large-scale prints by artists Liz Collins, Kathe Burkhart, A.L. Steiner, Alice O’Malley, K8 Hardy, Nicole Eisenman, Nolan Hendrickson, Andrea Geyer, Juliet Jacobson, Colin Self, Laura Parnes and Sam McKinniss are in our permanent collection. The salon caters to the New York community’s cultural tastes. Seagull clients are artists, writers, fashion editors, musicians, actors, and others.
