Seagull Salon stylists are a highly skilled and dedicated team of hair cutters, colorists and nail artists who work together as a collaborative family.
Non-compartmentalized and versatile, many of our stylists both cut and color hair, creating a “total look” for each client. Whether you are looking for an expert in grey hair, balayage highlights, editorial ombre, or fantasy color, Seagull has you covered! You can expect a relaxed vibe in a beautiful environment where all kinds of people are included and celebrated. Seagull is a feminist salon: We do not mandate styles according to face shape, body type, or gender expression. Instead, each of our stylists works with your vision, making suggestions based on the ideas and inspirations you bring. We strive to be the very best New York City has to offer and our work is always 100% guaranteed.
Our team comes from upscale Manhattan salons including Arrojo and Ted Gibson, as well as acclaimed downtown and Brooklyn salons including Mudhoney, Whittemore House, and Woodley and Bunny. We specialize in razor cutting, dry cutting and we boast some of the best curly hair cutters in the world.
Our stylists have been featured in The New York Times for curly hair, The New York Times Metro Section, Allure for best hair stylists in the city, The New York Times Magazine for best salons as well as Nylon, Refinery 29, Racked, Cosmopolitan, and New York Magazine for all kinds of hair color. Please see our press page for more current articles and press mentions. Each of our stylists has an extensive bio to help choose who is best for you, and our front desk staff is well versed in all types of hair coloring and hair cutting to help you book an optimal Seagull experience.
Some words from our Seagull devotees:
“I think Seagull sort of takes the word ‘salon’ to a new level. It’s a laughable word in relationship to hair cutting and so on, but somehow the salon’s vibe is cultural. It’s not Gertrude Stein-y, but you’re in the art world while getting your haircut. I’ve known about Jo since before her Le Tigre days; she’s someone who understands feminist culture. She’s a player.” – Eileen Myles, Writer
“It’s like I’m hanging out with my best girlfriends, who happen to do really great hair. I think what Johanna and Shaun have created is really special. It feels like family. The family you create — not the one you were born into.” – Bridget Everett, Comedian
“I always see Shaun, and he is a consummate artist. I can always count on him for a very stimulating 45-minute conversation from a queer/feminist/magical perspective; and I so appreciate having his council as I confront the problems of self-presentation and aging,” – Carol Bove, Artist
“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Shaun for the better part of 5 years. He is a brilliant stylist and easy to communicate with. Aside from being a great stylist he is a joy to be around and getting to know him personally has been wonderful, he is hilarious. We are never lacking in topics to dissect together. He is a true artist.”
–Nicole Eisenman, Visual Artist
“As the director of Participant Inc. I come across artists of many disciplines. I am happy to include Shaun among not only my colleagues, but as one of my good friends. Shaun is fun, sincere and incredibly talented both as a hair stylist and artist in general and I am pleased to count him as one of my peers.”
